Why do people automatically assume that having glasses means your nerdy? Thinking logically, that would mean that an eye that is too long, or too short, makes you smart. Can anyone explain were this common misconception stems from.

Because in previous centuries, bad vision was just a fact of life. The only people who bought spectacles were the people who had to be able to see close up very well-- bookkeepers, scholars, clergymen, seamstresses, etc. It was a sign of a professional, or a sign of a reader. Now, everyone with bad sight gets glasses, but back then you only got them if you needed them to make a living, or if you were very wealthy.

I believe it is a throwback to the 50's when high school kids that were smart wore glasses. People at that time assumed that because they were smart and may have read alot they were nerdy. Also intellectually smart kids never felt comfortable around others that were below their learning level, so they usually hung around others that were on the same learning level as they were.

I have no idea, but it has been this way for a long time. Maybe glasses give off the aura that one is a bookworm type, studious, quiet, a little dorky. I don't know how, but I am sure that stereotypes in art, literature, movies, or what have you is the reason we conjure up this idea.

I guess it is because some people are shallow and insist on judging someone by looks. Today, glasses are very fashionable and are considered an accessory. I wouldn't worry about what other people think. It matters what YOU think of yourself, not what someone else thinks.

good question....my guess is that people usually put on glasses for reading purposes...people who read are usually intelligent...and it's usually the intelligent people who r nerdy...
