Racism and paranoia.

They think that we are better than all the other people on earth and so shouldn't be subject to the same rules as them. They think foreigners can do one of two things: obey us or die.

The paranoia part of it is they are terrified of foreigners. They don't want to learn other languages, so they think the brown people are talking about eating them all the time.

Their pastor also tells them that the UN is the tool of the antichrist.

The ironic thing is we founded the UN, as a security council member, we have a veto over everything they decide, and they can't do anything big like a major military action unless we support it.

So they are essentially cowering before a kitten as if it were a lion.

Most of the people who have answered this question before me have no idea of the UN's history or anything about the UN.

First -- The UN was the idea of President Roosevelt during WW-2, although it follows on from the idea of the "League of Nations" which disintegrated during the 1930's.

Second -- The US does not pay much towards the UN. In fact the US has not paid a lot of its dues for a number of years and is something like 8 to 10 years in default.

Third -- The UN is a forum for nations to express their opinions and to attempt to maintain peace and security along with assisting where there are problems, i.e. with refugees, world health, trade agreements, international laws (aviation, laws of the sea etc).

Fourth-- The US, and especially the right-wing and military-industrial complex, does not like the UN because the US has violated many of the UN's charter, has violated numerous international agreements and international laws, and many of the nations at the UN speak out about these violations. (For those Americans who disagree with me, check your history -- The US violated the Potsdam agreement of Germany and Korea which led to the Korean War. The US violated every aspect of the 1954 Geneva agreements on Indochina which led to the Second Indochina War [Vietnam War], The US has intervened in the domestic affairs of independent nations assisting with coups etc plus the numerous invasions of independent countries in violation of the UN charter)

Most Americans do not hate the UN but they are dissappointed in the UN. UN was envisioned to provide a forum for all nations to come together to work for the betterment of all humanity and it often misses the mark. Their are many UN programs which do a tremendous amount of good in the world which the American public is satisfied with but unfortunately this is overshadowed by the UN's stances on humanitarian issues such as Darfur, Iraq, Iran and others. I will clarify specifically:
Darfur - Failure to prevent genocide and to protect the defenseless.
Iraq - Implements a humanitarian oil for food program which almost all the UN Security council circumvents to but cheap oil for weapons, and other banned goods.
Iran - A nation which openly supports terrorists and advocates for the total destruction and genocide of one of it neighbors is claiming to be developing technology which will allow them to create one of the most powerful weapons on the face of the planet and the UN is failing to act because of economic intrests primarily China and Russia's.
The largest problem with the UN is that it is not compromised by democratic governments who strive for the betterment of humanity. Criticize the west and US all you want but you can not deny that the west and the US have done more for the world than any other nation. These western nations pour billions of dollars into Aid and development packages not to mention the addiotnal billion in supplies and food they distribute to the poorest countries. Who else does that on that level. Who else has even tried.

Because people believe that the U.N members along with Council on Foreign relation members are interested in a one world government. In other words an end to America.

The North American Union is an example of this. Our open borders are another example of this.

No more America but world power. One world Military. These types of things and alot of people are Proud to be an american types and are not down for the One World Government or the "New World Order"

seems to be part ignorance, part hypocrisy and usually a lot of paranoia...

first off, it's a governmental organization made up of other governments, of course it's going to be corrupt to some degree, as the U.S. government (and any government) is...

it was intended to really be more of a "coming together point" from what I can understand, and was never intended to actually take care of problems, but merely be a forum to discuss problems and come up with solutions with everyone at the table...

no one wants to give them an army to actually enforce its resolutions, so everyone should stop complaining about how they aren't stopping every bad man in the world, that's not really their point and from what I understand, they don't have the capabilities to do these things they are being blamed for not doing?

and yes, as you can clearly see from other answers, many are very angry that other nations "dare have a different opinion than the U.S." that's certainly part of it as well...

you can really tell why, from a lot of the answers on here... however based in reality they are or not...

The US has a strong tradition of self-rule and political indepenence - even isolationism. When it was first proposed, the UN struck many as giving up autonomy.

However, the UN has turned out to be a largely symbolic, impotent institution.

So come Americans, particularly older ones, still resent the concept of the UN on patriotic or isolationist grounds, while many younger ones view it as a pathetic joke.

the U.N. is worthless! look at Iraq. They went over there thinking Saddam was going to cooperate. In no way shape or form did he cooperate! They wanted to go unannonced (sp) but he wouldn't let them do it! Boy gus was he hiding something (sarcasim)? Did you know that before the inspectors got to several places. Semi's were leaving the place at breakneck speed? i wonder what they were leaving for? The idea for the UN is good but unfortunantly it doesn't work! It's usually anti American to. F that!

The UN does not acknowledge America as the policemen of the world. They knew the supeheroes come from Hollywood.

Because the UN is a corrupt, impotent organization that does little of what it was created for. It soaks up vast amounts of money and resources and little of it goes to where it is needed.

I think you'll find it's not just Americans that hate the UN either.

Because we believe that people should be governed by a government of their choosing that is how our government is established. We elect our leaders and representatives, anything other than that is illegitimate in my eye.
Why should we allow a global government to compel us to abide by Utopian laws when we [ the people ] have no say.
