P.E.T.A. (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is an organization that fights for animal rights. They've typically gone after abuses in such areas as industrial farming (horrible treatment of pigs, chickens, cattle...), research (medical, cosmetic...), and fashion (fur). Their tactics have included boycotts, protests, and ad campaigns (like the "Wear Your Own Fur" ads).

Although their mission statement is admirable, the general public seems to have a less-than-favorable impression of them. Among other gaffes, a lot of their pamphlets have really grizzly images of mutilated animals, presumably to shock the reader into taking up their cause. This, to me, is similar to those pro-life posters with the horrible pictures. This type of public "education" just doesn't work. They need to revise some of their strategies, but all in all, I'm glad animals have at least some voice in the public sphere.

I don't know all of the cosmetic companies that perform animal testing, but a way to find out is to check the bottle. If it doesn't explicitly say "This product was not tested on animals", it was tested on animals. Proctor & Gamble are notorious for this. The link I provided can give you more information.

Oh, and be careful before you click any links provided by answerers because they may be too much to stomach (the one I provided is safe).

Sigh. PETA is a animal rights group that is misguided.

According to PETA, everyone should release all of their animals into the wild (yes, they do not think it is ok to own pets!), and that everyone should be a vegetarian.

They do try to stop animal testing, but sometimes animal testing is necessary. For example, when Endostatin (a cancer drug) was created, it was such a new concept that many scientists did not think that the theory behind it was plausible. Well, the idea behind Endostatin was that somehow, cancer cells excrete a chemical that causes blood veesel to travel to the tumor, therefore feeding the tumor and allowing it to grow. This was proven because they put cancer cells in a rabbit's cornea (part of the eye where no blood vessels are present). Sure enough, blood vessels went to the cornea to feed the tumor, because of the mystery chemical that cancers cells use to draw blood vessels to them!

And while Endostatin was not the miracle drug it was hyped up to be, it has saved likely hundreds of people's lives, and explained a VERY important concept about how cancer grows! Was that worth the life of one rabbit? I think so.

But I am with you as far as cosmetics goes. that is unnecessary. Check the labels to make sure that the product was not tested on animals. If it was, it won't mention animal testing on the label. So don't buy it!

PETA says that everything that they do is for the good of animals, but they believe that we should just release all of our pets into the wild. They also have recently had a court case about the euthanization of of large numbers of animals. No matter what good they are doing to stop animal testing, their means and beliefs are too extreme.

PETA uses a lot of propaganda to get members. They do not believe in pet ownership. They claim to act in the interest of animals, but often do otherwise. They have been involved in some serious scandals including euthanizing animals from shelters that they were supposedly transporting to other shelters and tossing the bodies in trash dumpsters behind supermarkets.

I don't think they they are an honest or legitimate organization, but rather an extremist group. If you want a more balanced view, check out the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

Peta stands for People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals. It is an organization to help get people active for many different things with animals, including animal testing, abuse, dessection, etc. It is a great website to help animals in any way, and to tell people about cruelty to animals. Hope I helped!

PETA believes that owning an animal is slavery. That's right- if you own ANY animal as a pet, Peta believes you have made that pet into your personal slave, for your own personal entertainment and satisfaction.

Is supposed to be for the ethical treatment of animals but they don't want us to eat meat either. I usually support groups for helping animals but their's is full of propoganda. I have been a target of them before.

If you're truly interested, go to their website www.peta.com and read all about their mission and what they do. They also have a list of all companies who conduct animal testing and those who don't.
