The egg cell and the sperm cell each contain half of the DNA needed to make a complete human embryo. The two cells must join together in order to give the correct number of chromosomes (46 total, or 23 from each sperm and egg cell).

If the egg and sperm do not join then there is no fertilization and both ova and sperm would simply die off.

It's not important. It is just what has to happen occassionally if a species is to continue to exist.
