Look into a folder under
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS
if you see a bunch of files there and they total around 160MB
Thats your Windows installation files, make a copy of that onto a CD if possible, then

Restart computer
Press F8
Choose MS-DOS mode
Type in :
CD C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS
and type SETUP
it should start the 98 installation and hopefully solve your problem

* ADDED NOTES *
'what' just gave me an idea, try this first
Start the PC
Press F8 and choose MS-DOS from the menu
Once in DOS
Type in
SCANREG /RESTORE (space between G and / )
This should bring up an menu
Pick a date to roll back the registry
if you can get on say few days or even few weeks, try it
Restart after its restored
Hopefully you may get into Windows

the error of MSVCRT is a common error from memory, as at the time, many applications utilize this to run their software, so sometime is impossible to work out which is causing it unless it pinpoints the module its linked to

This is an infection, one that is difficult to remove. It has affected a Windows system file, thus Windows' request to be reinstalled. However, it can be disinfected although it is a bit tedious. Step by step instructions are here: http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.nibu.e.html
Good luck.

Saw your updated notes (can't even get to desktop). Turn your pc on, and as it is trying to load, press the F8 key on the keyboard once every 3 or 4 seconds. A startup menu should appear. When it does, choose the option "Safe Mode with Networking". It should load your desktop, although the icons may all look very large and out of line. Ignore that, and try to remove the virus using the steps in the link I gave previously. (Print them out using a different pc so you can mark off each step as you go.) Post back if you need more help.

You can't really do anything except use another OS. Something like Linux. If you ever have old computers use Desktop Light Linux (DeLi). Or any other light OS for an old computer.

I'm sure you didn't use that computer for games. So give linux a try. If you don't like it. You could switch back to Windows 98 if you could get a hold of the CD.

I had that problem once I bought a new I kept the old one to play with just to see if I could fix it, it was fixed the problem was that some of the registry files was bad try downloading a registry fix program and scan the computer and you will probably have to buy a licenses for it the one I bought was $30.
Good luck with it if nothing else you can buy a new computer and play with that one until you fix it.

Not that I know of. Check out this link. You can buy Win98 for $34. With your amount of RAM and hard drive that's all you can handle. I hope you can afford the $34.
