You should find out your sound card or hardware info first. Is it onboard or is it a card? Who makes it? What model is it?
You can always try uninstalling it and then restarting your computer, and see if Windows will find it and select a good driver for you.

You probably have a vista right?

I had this happened when I installed some updates for Windows Vista, I had to restore my dang computer just to get the audio back. You can try going to Control Panels- Add & Remove Programs and look for an audio output update for the driver, uninstall that, it may work... If not... sorry I couldn't be of any help.
