It takes more gas to start a car than to let it idle for several minutes.

I don't like any of the answers so far.

If they are in a cab line, they'll have to move every minute or two. But if they are just sitting in the same spot, there is no good reason not to shut off the motor, unless they want the AC to run or something.

There is nothing wrong with re-starting a warm motor. It's already warmed up and lubricated and ready to go. So turning the engine off makes sense. It uses less gas. It is a myth that it takes less gas to keep the car running, unless we are talking about shutting it off for 30 seconds or less.

the meters would quit running. Cabbies don't get hourly pay, their pay is taking people from place to place to place. What is on the meter is Their pay. Minus the gas, oil, wash, etc. Plus mileage. the rest is theirs.
Used to drive Cabs. Try it, you'll never complain about a cabbie again.

Same reason Police cars don't ...it usually isn't their gas. Luckily, most Cop cars and taxis are Ford Crown Vics and they are specially built for the extended idle time. Oversized fans and oil cooler stop them from overheating.

Its not their gas, and they probably are too lazy, or it is faster to leave on and go once their customers get in. It is hard to get out on the road sometimes.

Have you noticed that cabs are mostly gm's, ford's, and suchlike? Cabbies just know that every start can very well be the last one.
