it would really be a close call as to which would be cheaper a few power filters, a pair of canister filters or making a wet/dry filter and buying the pump. here's a few links for making a wet/dry and you can do a little pricing.

I wouldn't build one. I'd get some corner filters if money is a big issue.

Run two on Maxima or Optima pumps

This will probably total out to about 1/2 the price of power filters, and you'd need two big ones or more for this tank.
