No, I don't think obesity is contagious. Although obesity is a growing epidemic in America, it isn't like a disease, you can't "catch" it.
I think if obese people hang out with other obese people, it's because they don't want to feel bad about themselves by being bigger than their friends. If they hang out with other obese people I think it's because they fit in and don't have to feel like they're different.
And obese parents having obese children may be hereditary. Or the obese parents could just be setting a bad example to their children with their own eating habits. Then the children pick up on it and develop their own bad eating habits. And the parents could keep a lot of unhealthy food around the house so that it's always available. Then they could be eating out at fast food restaurants all the time.
It depends on the persons lifestyle. And it definitely is not contagious. So don't worry about hanging out with people who aren't the 'anorexic type'.
Hope this helps!

I wouldn't say it's contagious, but the old adage 'birds of a feather flock together' has a lot of truth in it. If you hang around people who are overweight/obese, you might adopt some of their eating patterns. Same as if you hang around with healthy fit people.
Not to say that you should not be friends with someone who is overweight...they are people too, you know. Maybe if society wasn't so judgmental about what everyone looks like on the outside, there may not be as many overweight people. Many people eat when they are sad and/or depressed, and what better way to put on pounds than when someone is constantly being slammed for being 'fat'? I feel so bad for people who have to deal with that.

You need to get your head out of your as_ and join the real world. I am a mid sized woman and my best friend is skinny and we have been best friends for over 20 years so I don't think your theory is correct with everyone and my heavy (obesity)if you would like to call it that has not rubbed off on her. Grow up and get a clue, parent s if they are over weight can pass it on through genes to there kids but it isn't something you can catch by touching someone! So immature of you!

No, obesity is not contagious.
Obese parents usually have obese kids because the parents don't diet and exercise correctly, and then pass on their bad habits down to their kids.
Obese people tend to hang out together because they like similar things. If you're into eating salads, playing tennis, and jogging, you're going to want to hang out with other people who like salads, playing tennis, and jogging. If you're into going to the movies, baking brownies, and playing computer games, then you're going to want to hang out with other people who do those things too.
I'm not saying that all obese parents have obese children, and I'm not saying that obese people only hang out with obese people, and skinny people only hang out with skinny people. I'm just trying to explain that it's not contagious and the above mentioned scenarios are just examples as to why it happens in real life.

They all like eating the same foods, so they hang out together. Luckily for me, i'm immune to their semi-contagious disease.=)
It's only contagious for those who eat the fatty foods or had parents who were a little on the big side....i think your safe from catching it, u could hang out with them if u ever want to!

No I doubt its contagious lol. Maybe they feel like they have more in common with people who are the same size at them that way they won't be chastised and made fun of by idiots. They feel comfortable around each other and don't get judged.

No, it is not contagious! I think the heavier people hang together as they accept one another for who they are...not how fat they are! You seem to be almost fearful of getting over weight! LOL!
Your question is like asking me if you stand next to someone of color...will it rub off on me? Geesh! Grow up!

Um... of course not. How could being fat (i.e. overeating) be passed to other people? From mother to child yes, but not any other way.
