the placenta puts pressure on the lower back and there is nothing there to support theplacenta and can be damaging or very hurtful. it is best to sleep on the left side to allow the placenta and baby to be supported by the bed or pillow and allow movement of the baby.

The enlarged uterus can put pressure on the VENA CAVA which is the large VEIN coming FROM the lower part of the body back to the heart. When that gets compressed, there is a great reduction in blood returning to the heart. Blood pressure then drops because the heart does not have as much blood to pump out. The drop in blood pressure causes your body to trigger some sympathetic responses to keep the blood pressure up. One of those responses is to reduce blood flow to the uterus. That can hurt the baby. (The mom may also have symptoms like light headedness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting from the drop in blood pressure.)

Hello!
It is recommended by dr's not to sleep on your back or right side because there are veins and nerves that can be effected by the pressure/weight of the baby on them and can decrease the blood flow to the baby.
However, they also say that if you wake up on your back or right side to just roll over.
I have been a right side sleeper my whole life and when I was pregnant it was hard to sleep at first on my left side. I got a body pillow at walmart ($10) and put it behind me to help me from rolling over. This didnt always work but thats ok. Its not going to hurt your baby for you to sleep that way. If your baby is in any distress he/she will let you know, promise!

Laying on your back can pinch off your Vena Cava which is the main artery to the lower half of your body. Doing this can decrease the amount of blood flow and oxygen getting to your baby as well as you legs which might cause leg cramps or pins and needles. Sleeping on your back in the 2nd/3rd trimester can also leave you with one heck of a backache. You'll find that you naturally gravitate to your sides for this reason alone.

It reduces blood flow to the baby.

Has anyone wondered why doctors make you give birth on your back if you arent supposed to sleep on your back? Why is it okay to reduce blood flow to a child who is having a very hard time and not to the same one who is doing nothing in particular? :-?

I thought it was because of the blood flow to the legs...not the baby. When you lay on your back the weight of the baby kinks the blood vessels going to your legs. If you happen to roll on your back in the middle of the night, you will most likely be awakened by your legs tingeling and cramping.

i think it is because your uterus is so heavy at this point and it can cause major back pains... and the blood flow to your baby..
I think the back problems are true.. i was having wicked pains in my legs from sleeping on my side (because all the weight to my legs).. so i said hey im going to sleep on my back... well HA!.. when i woke up in the morning my back was killing me!!!... so id say just sleep on your side.. if your belly is to heavy then put a small pillow under it.. thats what i am doing now and it is MUCH better...

It reduces the supply of blood to the baby. And gets bloody uncomfortable after a while. If you wake up on your back, don't worry, just turn to your side.

The best position is on your left side as this provides the best blood flow to the baby.

Sides are the best (left is really better)....but back is ok, but you'll be uncomfortable.

anyway you want to sleep will be fine, just not on your stomach.....
