Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.), citing concerns about Americans' privacy, signaled yesterday that he will push to repeal a provision of a 2005 law aimed at creating new government standards for driver's licenses.

Leahy, who has co-sponsored bipartisan legislation to repeal the provision, spoke out as the debate intensified over the Real ID Act, which requires states to create new tamper-proof driver's licenses in line with rules recently issued by the Department of Homeland Security. States must begin to comply by May 2008 but can request more time. After 2013, people whose IDs do not meet those standards will not be allowed to board planes or enter federal buildings.

They are already implementing this technology in the U.K. - http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,3605,999866,00.html

Further making my feelings of this country turning into more of a prison then a free country a reality.

"After 2013, people whose IDs do not meet those standards will not be allowed to board planes or enter federal buildings." ... So If you don't follow the rules then you can't even leave the country...sounds more like..." Try to go against us...you won't be able to leave the country anyways "

Now i don't want to hear "spin talk" on how this will help lower the kidnapping rate or the fact that it will be convient not to have to carry cash anymore or a wallet! Because it will be all in your wrist...

Seems to me as another tactic for our government to have control over the populus through fear and manipulation of the masses....your feelings?

Um, in case you don't know, many employers track their employees 24/7. The cellphones that companies provide to their workers allows companies to track their employees. It is a little known secret that cellphone companies provide maps(via the internet) to companies that show each cellphone's location at anytime of the day. Companies bosses at home can know where you go after work.

Dims are against it because it will stop illegal aliens from voting. Many illegal aliens can vote since they have fake ID's.

Democrat ad directed at illegal aliens. This was during the May 2006 protests.

dont understand, but a more "across" the board driver's license that looks the same in every state, would be more helpful than a deterrant.

I dont understand how you get the "tracked" 24/7 because I know several people who do not hae a driver's license. only passports. Doesn't say anything there about passports being eliminated; and as far as Im concerned, that is the only identification I use when traveling.

They were talking of a national ID for immigrants in Our country. I think a tamper proof DL would be great. Whats the problem with that?

Maybe other states are a different from CA, but I've had to carry an ID card my entire adult life. I was asked to show it when I got on a plane. How is this going to be any different?
