I wouldn't recommend the latex paint in the previous answer.
Your better bet (for durability) would be a spray enamel, either
gloss or flat. Get some blue painter's tape (or use masking
tape ... if you can't find any masking tape, use scotch tape)
and cover the metal separator bands - whatever you don't
wish to paint before spraying. [I don't think you'd actually do
this, but - - - don't do this with the lamp plugged in; take it
outside to spray it].
An alternate paint idea would be the "stone fleck" type of
paint that's been available on the market for a while now.
There are lots of colors there, and this would offer a texture
alternate also.

Preparation is half the trick. If the metal is rusted you need to clean it all off by wire bush and sand paper to get a smooth surface. You should also wipe it down to remove any oils or grease. White vinnegar works well. If the old paint isn't flaking or chipping off just lightly sand it to rough the surface. wipe it down and let it dry. Rustoleum brand spray paints are made for metal surfaces. They come in all colors and finishes. Wlamart, Home Depot, Lowes or any hardware store will carry them. If you have to go down to bare metal you may want to use a primer. Follow the directions on the spray cans and you should have no problem. Good Luck with your project.

Bravo to the last answer !! Painting is 80% preparation !!
My paint recommendations would be a Rustoleum primer... and then one of the Home-Depots spray texture paints.
I have used their spray-Granite, Sand-stone, and also their latex Copper.
I used the Copper paint on a stores aluminium window frames (yucky look)... I primed with a good primer, and then brushed the copper on carefully. That paint is still in GREAT condition after 5 years of outdoor exposure.

go to walmart and in the spray can paint area they have the metal paints. you can rust it, fleck it, stone it. I do not know if flat or gossy paints would work you would have to check the back of it and see if they stick to metals.
