So I wrote a short script, and I'm really happy with it. It's a serious story, and it requires good acting. I need a college age female and male (to be engaged), a little 4-6 years old girl (who can be really serious), and then some older people who don't have a big part. The problem is that I don't know anyone who fits the part, and how on earth am I going to find someone who...
1) looks like the part
2) can act
3) is willing to act and spend a lot of time and effort in making the film without being paid!!!

So I guess what I am asking is if anyone has any advice on where I could get people to act in movie. And I don't live in LA or NY or anything...I live in a smalltown in KY.

Well, sorry that this is kind of ramble-ish. Thanks for advice!

Actor's will always come, pay or not. Place an ad in the local paper, www.actorsaccess.com, or backstage.com. The ad will cost you something, but you state up front that there is no pay and actors will still come. You write a breakdown of each part, post it in your ad, set a date, time & place for people to come in and audition for you, make copies of scenes for the actors to study and read with you (put them in the lobby or waiting area), then call them in one by one, ask for their photo & resume if they have one (if not be prepared to take a poloroid), film the audition if you want, and go for it! Make sure you have everyone's contact info then call the people you either want to see again or to tell them they got the part. Make sure to have your shooting schedule worked out and posted in the ad so anyone with conflicts need not apply. If you don't get a good enough turn out, look up local acting schools and post flyers with a new audition date (or do this in addition to the ads in the first place!). Good luck!

Hmmm... if you could tie it to some sort of charity event, maybe ask for 'volunteers' for the movie, there are lots of people out there that are willing to have some fun for free. I LOVE acting, and I have a 6 yr old daughter that would love it too... too bad I'm in VA, we would have two of your slots taken care of. :) Good luck!

PS - take out a small ad in the entertainment section of the classifieds or post some flyers around some schools. I'm sure you'll get a call or two.

Believe it or not, there are PLENTY of actors willing to work for free for a student film and such. I did it. The film I was in entailed weeks of filming in the burning heat of June with no air conditioning, and we were the ones thanking the director!

You could try posting audition notices at cafe's and schools and such. You'd be surprised at how many people show up. Be sure to mention there is no pay for the job at auditions.

Almost every town has a Civic or Community Theatre group. You will be able to find many actors in all age rages with experience dealing with non-paying gigs. Community theatre actors do it for the fun of acting and as a hobby. Scout out the next open casting call/audtions and you will be able to find many able bodied people...

Good Luck!

There is an area on myspace for advertising your needs for actors. You can just be upfront and say it will not be a paid part but it could lead to exposure for them, something all potential actors want. I've found that you do not need to pay actors to be in college films/short films. People will just do this kind of thing for free.

I'm a cinema major in l.a. and I learned the best place to go to find actors is at a school. Just go to your local highschool theatre class or college and find students to come out in your film. Although youre not paying them, if the movie comes out good they can use it as a resume and it's great practice for them.

Best way is to go to a theatre school or to go to a college and state it, impress on them that it would be good for their portfolio? also you can apply in your local newspaper
