About 3 years ago or so, I heard rumors that New Line and Peter Jackson were going to make The Hobbit into a movie. I haven't heard anything else about it and being a die hard LOTR fan, the books and the movies and other Tolkien stories, I am anxious to know what's happening with that, Does anyone know any new information on that?

They are making "The Hobbit" I heard that Ian Holm and Sir Ian Mckellen were both interested in making the movie. I have faith that it will be good. I could guarentee that it would be up to the standards of the previous three LOTR if Peter Jackson was directing it, but Sam Raimi is a very capable replacement. He is very good at using special effects (from the spidreman movies) and he knows how to tell a good storie with out making it look like a "special effects" movie. So I wouldnt worry. Get psyched, the LOTR lives on until 2009 :)

New Line own the rights, and it's currently scheduled for 2009, with Sam Raimi set to direct.

Eep. I can't envisage The Hobbit working, it's nothing like LOTR. I'd put my faith in Peter Jackson to somehow make it happen, but much as I like Sam Raimi I just can't see it. It's too weird and different. Who really wants to see 13 dwarves and a hobbit go tramping about the countryside? Not even me and I love the Middle Earth stories more than anything, but I think this one should stay in a book.

If this movie does happen, I really, really hope it proves me wrong and becomes a triumph. I'd hate for it to bring down the reputation of the book.

Well...due to New Line suing Jackson...doesn't look like he will be directing...so the next person in line, right now, is Sam Raimi...and yes they still intend to make the film.
