I'm a pharmacist so I'm not really big on natural products. However there are some data that show the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin may help mild to moderate arthritis. It doesn't work over night, but it may show some benefit after a month or so. As for over the counter drugs, there isn't much. Common wisdom is to try tylenol (or generic acetamenophen) first since it is the safest drug to take. If that isn't effective than NSAIDs are the next rational step, if you dont have any contraindications to them such as heart problems, heartburn/GERD, or any other propensity to bleeding. The most commonly used OTC NSAIDs are Aleve (naproxen sodium) and Motrin.(ibuprofen). These drugs used at the approved OTC dosing guidelines are effective for mild to moderate arthritis. They should not be taken for a long term without consulting your physician. If the arthritis is severe than you should see an MD so that more potent medications can be used.

I have a friend who was diagnosed with rhematoid arthritis and she has completley removed her factors by eating "clean" and working out with weights. She was up for life insurance and they denied her initially. after eating "clean" and working out they approved her and gave her the best rate possible 'cause they couldn't find anything wrong. I belive it was about 6-8 weeks of that kind of lifestyle. Might seem extreme but better than having to get chemo all the time. Do a search on clean eating should come up with a lot of links.

Not saying this is the answer to every problem, but take a look at this:
http://www.bibleplants.com/water.htm
It won't hurt to try it (just be sure you keep your mineral balance correct since too much water can flush out your electrolytes).
Also, if you have a licensed acupuncturist in your area, try that. It's worked wonders for me for a variety of problems (I don't like needles but these don't bother me).
Also, if you have a physician who can prescribe herbal medications, try the ones from -Heel.
You can get some of their things OTC in nature stores such as Traumeel which is a great, natural pain relief cream.
My acupuncturist gave me something homoeopathic for joint pain but I'm not near my desk (have laptop) at the moment. I'll come back in a bit and edit my post to give you the name of it.
Okay, the name is Neuralgo Rheum from Heel Inc. You can see their OTC products at http://www.HeelUSA.com
This particular product is for the stimulation of the defense mechanism in joint disorders:
* Chronic Arthritis and Arthrosis
* Neuralgic - Rheumatic disorders
* Exhaustion and Debility

Hey Kit !
You don't say what type of arthritis you have , your age or where in your body it affects you, Also you don't say what kind of drugs you are taking for it now. Knowing how long you have had it might be helpful along with some type of index for the pain you are in-- is it slight , moderate or severe pain?How restricted are you in your movements?
There are lots and lots of things you can use against this disease to control and get rid of it-- it can be done! However
at the least we have to know what drugs you are taking . Herbs can react with drugs and I wouldn't want you to be harmed--SO DON'T TAKE ANY HERBS UNLESS THE PERSON WHO RECOMMENDS THEM CHECKS FOR DRUG INTERACTIONS in can be dangerous!!!!!! email me if you'd like

Hi Kit
First thing you want to do is get the inflammation down. A powerful antioxidant will work. They will stabilize the free radicals and bring inflammation down. Next get the minerals your body needs into the cells so that it can do its job or healing. A good balanced ionic mineral solution can be easily assimilated into the cells so your general health may improve.

Kit,
Try visiting both an acupuncturist/herbalist and a naturopath. They can treat, provide supplements, and consult with you about nutrition.
For acupuncturists: http://www.aaom.org/45000.asp
For naturopaths: http://www.naturopathic.org/findannd.php

I don't think what I have to say can cure you but the info could deffinitely help reduce the daily pains you feel substantially.
"The quality of your health depends upon many pieces that not only include the health of your bodily systems, but also include a healthy diet, exercise, and spirituality.
Diet. Treatment of arthritis may center on developing healthy dietary guidelines, in addition to making some key adjustments in your relationship with food. Dietary recommendations include:
Increase your omega-3 essential fatty acid intake and decrease your omega-6 intake. Omega-3 essential fatty acids can dramatically reduce inflammation, while an excess of omega-6 can increase inflammation. Decrease the amount of polyunsaturated oils in your diet that contain omega-6 (such as sunflower, safflower, or corn oil). Increase your intake of omega-3 with fish oil, ground flax seed, minimal-mercury tuna, and wild-caught salmon.
Choose monounsatured oils. Olive oil is a healthy monounsaturated oil that is used in the Mediterranean diet (a diet praised for its anti-inflammatory effects on the body).
Increase the amount of fiber in your diet. A low-fiber diet can contribute to systemic inflammation. Liberally add ground flax seed (which is also high in omega-3 fatty acids) to many of your favorite recipes, smoothies, shakes, and salads. Also try coconut flour which is 58% fiber!
Eat fruits high in vitamin C. These help relieve inflammation. Choose blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, kiwi fruit, peaches, mango, cantaloupe melon, and anti-inflammatory fruits like apples.2 However, try to moderate your intake of citrus fruits that may be too acidic and irritating, such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruit.
Eat fresh produce high in carotenoids. Carotenoids are found in yellow and orange fruits and vegetables. A British study at the University of Manchester Medical School showed that subjects who ate a diet high in dietary carotenoids dramatically reduced their risk of inflammatory arthritis. Carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, and cantaloupe are some examples of foods that contain carotenoids.3
Eat superfoods that are rich in antioxidants. When you’re at the supermarket, just remember this rule of thumb: The deeper and richer the color of the fruit or vegetable, the more antioxidant power it has. Choose the most colorful fruits and vegetables in the produce aisle to benefit from powerful antioxidants. Vibrant choices include blueberries, red grapes, mangos, pomegranate, dark green leafy vegetables (such as spinach), Brussels sprouts, red cabbage, broccoli, sweet potatoes, carrots, and squash.
Increase your intake of calcium and vitamin D. Those who suffer from arthritis may suffer from coexisting bone conditions as well. In order to protect your bones, choose foods that are naturally high in calcium such as mustard greens, broccoli, spinach, collard greens, and turnip greens. Foods rich in vitamin D include mercury-minimal tuna, sunflower seeds, and wild-caught salmon. Also, moderate exposure to sunlight increases vitamin D production, which helps the body absorb calcium.
Add anti-inflammatory herbs to your diet. Herbs like turmeric, ginger, and garlic have powerful anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that naturally help boost the immune system..."
