to simplify
and sorry about the "root" i can't figure out how to show the square root sign, it's supposed to be around the 3's in both cases! thanks help much appreciated.

here is another similiar one:

a. By simplify I assume that you mean to multiply the two binomials.

b. I'm going to use k for (sqrt 3).

Multiply 9*2 = 18
Multiply 9*8k = 72k
multiply -4k*2 = -8k
multiply -4k*8k = -32 k^2 = -32 * 3 = -96

18- 96 = -78
72k - 8k = 64 k

-78 + 64 sqrt 3

root 12 = root 4 * root 3 = 2 root 3
root 50 = root 2 *root 25 = 5 root 2
-4 root 75 = -4 root 3 * root 25 = -4 root 3 * 5 = -20 root 3
root 8 = root 4 * root 2 = 2 root 2

combining like roots gets you

7 root 2 - 18 root 3

Hopes that helps.

you can do the square root thing on your calculator. And no, don't foil it unless you have variables.

and is it 9 minus the 4th root of 3? or 9 minus 3 (3 (pretend the ( is the square root sign)

if its the 2nd option then i would square root 3 and then multiply it by -4 and add 9, then save that off to the side and square root 3 again and add 8 and then 2 and then multiply that with what you put aside before.

Is it 64√3 - 14?

The trickiest part is 4√3 x 8√3. I had to prove first that 2x * 2x = 4x^2

I think I used distributive multiplication (not sure of the name)
9 x 2
- 4√3(2)
+ 9 x 8√3
- 4√3 x 8√3 (this equals 32 because of the 2x x 2x = 4x^2 proof)

9*2 + 9*8root3 + (-4root3*2) + (-4root3*8root 3)

18 + 72root3 - 8root3 - 32*3 (because root3*root3= 3)

do the math from there.

To print the radical symbol (used for square roots and other roots), use your 10-key calculator keys on your computer keyboard. First press alt. Then, while still holding down the alt key, enter the number 251 from your 10-key:

alt + 251 = √

Make sure you have your Num Lock key on before doing this.

The word Cartesian comes from René Descartes a French mathematician and philosopher from long ago who is credited with the idea of plotting points and functions on the X-Y axes, or plane. He is also famous for the saying "I think, therefore I am." ("Cogito ergo sum" in Latin.)
