I'm planning on purchasing a teacher gradebook software program download. The site suggests that after downloading the program, I burn it to a disc so I can use it on other computers as well.

*One of the listed requirements of the software is 20 mb of free space on my hard disk drive.

MY QUESTION: Instead of burning this program to a disc, can I also copy it to one of those 1gb flash drives? Is that flash drive the same thing as a CD-R? Is 1 gb large enough to hold the program and it's contents?

I would be using a Mac. Is the process of copying to the flash drive easy?

Thanks for your help!

Yes, you can use a flash drive in place of a CD. All you need to do is drag the file over to the drive. 20MB will fit on a 1GB (1024MB) flash drive. A CD and a flash drive aren't the same thing, but they will both work.

You can definitely copy it on a flash drive. You can copy just about anything on a 1gb flash drive as long as it's under the 1gb size of course. 1gb = 1024 mb so it can hold you the 20mb program and many more :)
The flash drive is not the same thing as a CD-R, but can be and is used for the same purpose, which is to store data. I mostly use it to store random data, music, stuff for school and things I get from friends. It's very nice to use because it's small and you can store data from computers which don't even have a CD burner.
I hope this answers your question!

Yes you can copy it to a 1GB flash drive. A 1GB flash drive will be plenty of room for the software. It'll work fine and it's portable enough to take with you everywhere. The process of copying to a flash drive is as simple as drag and drop. I use a PC right now but the process should be the same for a MAC.

Select the installation file for the program and drag it to your flash drive, which should come up as "removable drive" when you are viewing your computer drives. The file should automatically start to copy to the flash drive and once it's finished, that's it.

Is that flash drive the same thing as a CD-R
No a CD-R is a burnable cdrom not a flash drive.
If the software comes down to you as an image file you cannot access it on a flash drive without firstly opening th3e image and copying its contents. If the software is a standard executable you can put it anywhere and a flashdrive on a mac is plug and play, just insert the drive into a usb slot and it will become like any other drive on your machine

Yes you can save it to any type storage device. Flash drive as well. It's the same process as sending it to a CD. 1 Gb is more than enough space.

You can put it on a flash drive. They are just stating that for two reasons. One so you have a backup copy of the software in case you have to reinstall the software. Two so you can install on other computers easily.

If you copy the files to the 'root' of the pen, it should work in principle as a CDROM, as some software works off absolute paths

Yes you can download to the flashdrive and it will work the same as a cd. 1gig is much more space than you will use for this so that will be no problem.
