Do you have to get up on the roof every year in order to turn on the swamp cooler? Can't you just hook up one of the hoses down by the water heater and turn on the water?

Peter is right to some extent: wouldn't you want to maintain it also. I took care of more then several of these. I also made racks out of two by fours for them to sit on. Several of them were falling through the roofs of some places due to faulty maintenance.
After I started a maintenance program on them they all changed and started their own in the two trailer parks I did work for. It made a big difference.

You have a lot of cleaning and maintainence on these units to keep them running good. Not just turning them on every year and walking away.

Yes, but you don't want to use hot water! There is an attachment for the your outdoor spicket with a 1/4 inch hose attachment. The 1/4 inch hose has a separate shut off valve, and you can still use a regular hose. You can pick this up at any hardware store. The 1/4 in hose is similar to the ones used on many refrigerators, plastic.

You can do this as described above but you still want to go up on the roof at least once a year anyway to check the pads and sump for mold and other crud. Legionnaires disease was caused by a cooling tower which is very similar to a swamp (evaporative) cooler.
