I can answer some
They were American Indians trying to get more freedom and restitution from the US government. They were active in the 70's (I am not sure if they are anymore). They had an incident at Wounded Knee SD a standoff with FBI and also occupied Alcatraz for a while. They were important for bringing national attention to Indian rights

Native Americans (Indians)
They were seeking greater Indian rights and presence in the American political system, a counter-point to the African-American civil rights movement, the feminist movement, etc.
Founded in 1968
One might argue why they were important, because in comparison to the civil rights movements and feminist movements of the 1960s, this movement was very small and had very little effect. What it did, however, was to raise awareness of the plight of Native Americans, conditions on the reservations and also one might suggest that the Indian Gaming movement and their massive amounts of money (spread unevenly from one tribe to the next) is an out-growth of AIM
