I just bought a new HP desktop computer with Vista Premium and 2 GB RAM and 320GB harddrive. When I look at the memory meter of the computer it says its only using half of the 2 Gb RAM. Its only using a gig. Why is that?! We have 2 gb and wouldnt it be even faster if it used all of it??

maybe because you have it set to low energy use? or It dosen't always need the 2 gigs either... you need to have something running that can't use up 2 gigs of memory, then it won't use 100% of it!
And it would go slower if you are using 100% of your memory...that would just mean that it has too much to do and things would get slower! the computer also might be saving it in case you start a new program or something

Well, unless you set Vista to do so, it will only use up as much memory as it needs to. So, why would it use 100% of the memory if, to run at full speed, it only needed 1GB rather than 2GB of RAM?

Simply put, your computer will use more memory as it needs it, but it's like eating more than you're hungry for, and not using up all the energy from the food that you just ate (letting it lay around and waste).

Computers will only use as much memory as they need.

The more stuff you have running, the more the RAM meter will fill.

Load up a bunch of programs and then check it again. You'll see it start to fill up.

Either way, the computer will be running at top speed.

Hope that helps.

Computers only use as much memory as the currently running processes need. If the processes don't need to use the full 2GB, then there will be memory free. I actually think that a 1GB usage, your system is quite resource hungry, unless you're running a game & the system has shared graphics memory.

That's because the programs you are running are only using 1 GB of memory. Try launching Photoshop and just watch that meter zoom!!!

no it wouldnt be running faster, as a matter a fact it will be running really slow if it were to take call ur ram. so its a good thing that its not using all of it you dont want that to happen. so the less it uses the better off you will be and the computer will be.

And also, the video card, unless dedicated memory only, will take its memory from the RAM, so if you have 2gb and you have the video memory at 256mb then you will only show 1792mb left. If that is partly the case with you, then go into BIOS on start up and check it out.

You don't want the system to use all of your memory because then it would have to page out what it needs to do to the pagefile on your HD. Yes memory is faster, but if you fill it up then you will hear your HD being accessed much more often.

come on dude! don't worry! It's a dual core of course! If you need this size of memory it'll work! You can convert a movie and play a game the same time! Then you'll see your memory's abilities

It has to leave some for the applications, Vista is greedy, but even it know it has a limit
