Julius Caesar, was a consul of Rome with best friend and Son-in-law Pompiie magnus. When Caesars daughter died at child birth, their friendship became strained and it forced a war between the two great men of Rome. Caesar eventually defeated Pompiie and slowly took over the power of Rome and even became Dictator for life. However, ten senators seeing that Caesar would never be happy until he ruled as king (emperor) and would never accept exile killed him on the Senate floor. They were led by Brutus, who was the descendant of one of the founders of Rome and had the most powerful name in the cities history. By dying, Caesar's will had given all his power to his nephew Octavian, who with Caesars finest field commander Marc Antony, tracked down and defeated the killers of Julius, before fighting one another. Antony lost and Octavian became Caesar Augustus, the First Emperor of Rome.

It's funny you should ask this question now. Our English class is going over it right now. He was stabbed by his friend, Brutus. A lot of more people joined in on it such as, Cassius, Cinna, Trebonius, Mettelus Cimber, and etc...
They were all senators who did not want to see Caesar crowned emperor. Read it to find out more, if you haven't.

He was assassinated by a large faction of defenders of the long-time Roman Republic, led by Marcus Brutus, Caius Cassius and some seventy others. He was stabbed to death in the Roman Forum just before he was to deliver a speech, one the defenders feared would cause him to increase the powers already granted to him as "dictator for life", but not king. Remember he had brought Cleopatra of Egypt to Rome, with his son by her; and his defeat of his father in law, Pompey the Great, had made him tyrant in all but name. It was too late to save Rome's constitution by murdering him, but the conspirators couldn't be sure of that without trying. Caesar had gained to power by skipping steps, bribing, going into debt, cheating and warping the system. He deserved death; but the Roman mob wanted a dictator by then...and the conspirators were later forced to flee, after Antony made his speech in the Forum over Caesar's dad body; and they lost the war that followed, even a Antony and Cleopatra, in alliance, lost their war to Octavius (later "Augustus") and his superior admiral, making the republic finally into an official empire--ruled by "Caesars".

Too much to answer in this forum. He was an honorable man according to Shakesphere. (Of course, he was being sarcastic.)
