My water broke during an especially severe coughing spell. I thought I had just wet myself. The doctor suggested that I come to the hospital to be on the safe side. I had no labor pains or dilation at that point.
6 hours later, I gave birth to my first son. It happened so fast that the entire hospital was unprepared. They had told my husband to go home and the doctor didn't arrive until after crowning (the head poking out). I was glad that I had no idea of what was happening.

I had my 36 week appointment on Tuesday and was not dilated. The next night at 7:07pm I was the proud parent of my little man, Owen. My water broke at 8:30pm and I thought I was just having some clear discharge from having been examined that morning. After a few pantie liner changes throughout the night (it really was not much fluid) I thought I might have it checked out. Since the baby is to be born within 24 hours of your water breaking, when I finally was examined in hospital triage around 10:30am the next day there was a sense of urgency. I was hooked up on a few extra antibiotics to ward off any infection that may have occurred and pitocin. Since I still wasn't really dilated, I still had no contractions. That all changed once the pitocin took effect.... and man did it hit hard! Once I got the epidural though things progressed quickly and for the most part calmly. He was born vaginally with no complications. My son was born 3 weeks and 3 days early. Something I NEVER expected as I had had an extremely easy pregnancy and always a clean bill of health from all my doctors' appointments. So, yes, it is possible for your water to break (and not realize it) and not yet be dilated. It's true what they say, have your bags ready to go. Good luck! He/she really will come when you least expect it.

Yes your water can break even if you're not dilated. No it doesn't mean you'll deliver late, and just because your mom had to have a c-section that doesn't mean you will have to have one too. Everyone is different and every pregnancy is different. With my first child, my water broke a week early but i didn't go into labor. The doctor had to induce labor and after almost 12 hrs. of potocin they decided I would have to have a c-section, I had the baby at 9pm (36hrs after being admitted). With my 2nd child I went into labor about 4am and I had the baby at 12pm (only 8hrs of labor) No c-section was needed to have this one. The 3rd one I went into labor approx. 3am. and I delivered as soon as I arrived at the hospital 8:15am ( I didn't think this one was gonna be quick) Again, no c-section. My last and final one, I went into labor a few weeks early, so it scared me when I started to leak fluid at 2am. I got to the hospital at 3:30am and it was confirmed that my water had broke. Again the doctor gave me potocin and I was in labor for about 36 hrs. (Thankfully I didn't have to have a c-section). So you see every pregnancy is different.

Every labor is different, but I will tell you that I had a problem with dialating and ended up having a C section. They broke my water to get me going and gave me pitocin, but none of it would get me past 7 cm. My mom, however, delivered all of her kids vaginally and with no issues.
