Why is it that when I connect an external monitor to my laptop, my laptop monitor gets dimmer and the external monitor gets brighter? Is the external monitor and laptop monitor supposed to be like that? Is there some kind of setting that I need to change?

External monitors are just plain brighter. Laptops have to worry about their power consumption, external monitors do not.

I doubt that your laptop is really getting dimmer, it is just when you put the bright external monitor next to i it looks dimmer because you eye adjusts to the new brighter light source.
