According to the latest theories, the matter that is absorbed by a black hole is broken down into it's elemental particles and then radiated out through quantum tunnelling. This is why black holes can eventually dissolve or evaporate as they eventually radiate enough energy to drop below the 0.9 or 0.8 solar masses required to keep them stable.

A black hole is a collapsed star,the first process for a dying star is for it to expand into a red giant and as it`s total mass is slowly decreased it collapses in on itself caused by its gravity,it will condense and only become a black hole when the gravity it makes becomes so intense that not even light can escape its gravitational pull,hence the word black,any matter that strays into or near its gravity will be sucked into it and become a part of tha star,the matter will compress and virtually dissapear,it doesn`t whizz out the other side into an alternative dimension as some have suggested.The black hole (which our sun will become in around 5 billion years )can be as small as our own moon.

According to Steven Hawking, black holes sort of 'sublimate' radiation. But it would take so long for a black hole to 'evaporate', the universe will end well before that happens. Radiation is the only thing that escapes a black hole. This is in very basic terms, check out Steven Hawking book "The Nature of Time and Space" on the subject. It's really interesting.

Einstein said E = M*C^2. Although we really don't know what is happening in a black hole, it could be that matter and energy both lose their identity, assuming some indeterminate state. or not...

They don't. The mass is "condensed", so to speak. It's all there, it's just that the gravitational forces have made it the size of a pin prick.
