Well in theory you could describe all facies as any rock produced by a given set of conditions.. but while that is true, it is a little hard to grap sometimes, because their are metamorphic facies (i.e. a different set of pressure, temperature regimes produces different metamorhpic facies and their are sedimentary facies or lithofacies (so in sedimentary geology you frequently read that certain rocks represent a delta front facies, or a lacustrine facies).
So while "facies" has a very general meaning, it is usally used in a more specifuc sense in day to day use. i.e. low grade metamorphic facies or lacustrine facies etc...

No facies is usually defined as perhaps several rock layers making up a body of rock that have the same characteristics. Like a sandstone facies or a shale facies.

The term facies refers to all of the characteristics of a particular rock unit. For example, you might refer to a "tan, cross-bedded oolitic limestone facies". The characteristics of the rock unit come from the depositional environment.
Every depositional environment puts its own distinctive imprint on the sediment, making a particular facies. Thus, a facies is a distinct kind of rock for that area or environment.
Sandstone facies (beach environment)
Shale facies (offshore marine environment)
Limestone facies (far from sources of terrigenous input)
Each depositional environment grades laterally into other environments. We call this facies change when dealing with the rock record.

It is a term introduced by Amanz Gressly in 1883 to describe differing layers of geological strata.
