If you're talking about prescription drug use, then privacy wins out over an employer's "right to know." Does an employer even have a legal right to know what illnesses its employees have if it doesn't have a substantial or serious life/safety impact on job performance?
If you're talking about illegal drug use, then the employee has no right to privacy regarding illegal activity.
And of course, you're in a grey area if you're talking about constitutional questions such as medicinal marijuana or religious use of peyote.

False. While it's true that information on drug use is rightfully private, an employer never has a right to know about such use. Rather, they have a right not to hire anyone who isn't comfortable revealing such information. A job isn't indentured servitude, an employee is free to leave an uncomfortable situation at any time.

I oppose this statement because drug use affects work performance. An employer such as a day care facility should have every right to find out if their employees who work with children are on heroin.
Halucinogenic drugs affect worker performance on in every job possible.

If the drug use causes a change in the patients ability to concentrate, or to focus, or in their ability to safely operate equipment, or causes them to be unsafe in their operation of a motor vehicle, or reduces their ability to make safe and thoughtful decisions, then the employer has a right to know about it.
If the drug may cause some users to have allergic reactions or to pass out or convulse, then the patient should let friends and employers know so that if something bad happens their friends can react appropriately.
Do you want to go to Home Depot and get run over by some guy on a forklift who drives the forks right into you because he's been effected by some drug that he's on?

Defend. Drug use is a totally private matter and a personal choice. If a person uses drugs at work then they deserve to fired. What they do on their own personal time should be no one elses business. You don't refuse to hire drinkers because they might be drunk at work so don't treat drug users any differently. Use (not abuse) is a victimless crime and is only classified as a crime by the whim of the governement. Why is alcohal legal and marijuana not?

Oppose. Numerous medical journals and pharmaceutical companies have done studies demonstrating that illicit drug use/abuse can cause a wide variety of side effects and altered states that not only create a risk to the health of the individual, but also to the health and well being of customers and co-workers. Not to mention the risk of damage to property, increased insurance premiums, work-comp, and the public perception of the business.

Drug use should be informed to public. It shouldn't be kept by only the user. Things that happen to drug users should also be reported.
By doing this, people will probably change their minds about using drugs. It might prevent injuries and deaths

I dont think you should go to work high (unless its a reaaalllyyyyy boring or easy job) but what you do in your own time is your business.
Weed (not other drugs) is actually healthier than booze and cigarettes. It doesnt punch holes in your liver and THC (the chemicle in marijuana that makes you feel 'high') actually has cancer FIGHTING properties. Thats way a lot of people that smoke cigerates and weed dont feel the health effects because the weed erases the cancer causing effects of cigarets.
Its also america's biggest cash crop and we could make tons and tons of money, eliminate drug trade related crime if we just legalized
