I've tried using a different keyboard but that won't work either.

And I'm typing this on a different computer before you ask!

Thanks for the feedback....if it is the motherboard, I'm guessing that is bad news? Can it be fixed?

Keep in mind that the ports for Keyboards and Mice look exactly the same (except for being colour coded purple for keyboard and green for mice, except on even older pieces where there's a little picture of the mice or keyboard over the port it should be connecting to).

You may have plugged your keyboard in the wrong port.

Other possible causes, is that you cannot switch out a PS/2 connected mouse or keyboard without first turning off the pc. Turn off your pc, reset the keyboard connection and then turn it back on. USB connected mice and keyboards can be hot-swapped (meaning changed while the pc is turned on) but not the older style connections.

Also, you may have a damaged pin or connector on the motherboard or keyboard. Pull out the keybord connector and look for bent or damaged pins on both the keyboard cable and the port. If the port is damaged, you'll likely have to replace the motherboard, otherwise if the cable is damaged, you'll have to replace the keyboard.

Also, if you have Windows 98 installed and are trying to connect a USB keyboard you will have to go to the manufacturer website and download the win98 USB drivers for your keyboard and install them before the keyboard will work.

Either the port is cream crackered or you've blown the keyboard fuse on the motherboard. It's usually a soldered in 0.5A or 1.0A job. Check the mini din for +5V, if it's present then the kbd controller has gone to uChip Heaven.

It's possible that the port where your keyboard is plugged could be bad. That's either a PS/2 port or a USB port. You should have more than one USB port, try another one. If it's PS/2, try using a USB keyboard.

Well the only reason i can think of is that you are plugging in the keyboard while the computer is still on when really you should plug it in when its off then just turn it back on. So try that. Hope this helps.

it could be the keyboard port on the back of your computer has come loose, or isn't working (where the keyboard pins go in)

what happens in most case is the pins on the keyboard end get bent or break of so the port on your computer can't sense it.

just make sure your port isn't out of place and nothing is blocking it!

SIlly question possibly... Have you plugged the keyboard into the mouse port (if it's the circular PS/2 type connectors).
