Hello,
I hate to disagree with some of your first responder's information, but the MYTH that people only use 10% of their brains is pure conjecture, without any scientific basis at all. One reason people believe the brain is the most complicated organ is because that's literally true. There are literally trillions of cells in an average human brain,of over a dozen different types, each of which can engage in multiple functions in multiple parts of the brain. The possible number of physical/chemical connections between the cells in the brains are nearly infinite. The human brain, if it could process information as fast as the fastest super-computer, would make it look like a mental nothing. No computer can multi-task and analyze incoming streams of data from numerous sources simultaneously as does the human brain. Computers operate serially. They very quickly go from A to B to C..... and do so incredibly fast. This is why many people believe computers are so "smart". They're not smart, they're just very rapid calculators of serial data. The human brain does not only operate serially, but multi-linearly, and multi-dimensionally, being able to do things such as regulating every process of your body (without your conscious knowledge) while at the same time allowing you to read and understand a book, listen and comprehend music, smell a flower, taste a cookie, remember a phone number, sense a bug landing on your arm, etc. No computer can do this. So, the brain IS amazingly complex.
I don't believe the brain is the most MISunderstood organ of the body. I believe it may be the LEAST understood organ, due to that very complexity. It is not necessary to back to experiments which today would be considered cruel and inhumane to learn more about brain structure and functioning. Our brains have allowed us to develop ever more amazing tools to tell us about itself, such as CAT scans, MRI scans, PET and SPECT scans, as well as various neurological and neuropsychological studies. It is these latter scans, which show the actual functioning of living brain tissue, which can put to rest the myth of us only using 10% of our brains. I hope this helps.

Because all those who have one only use 10% and no one knows why or how to increase it.
Because psychiatry is so primative that meds are administered ALMOST in a trial and error basis AND 95% of all the chemicals are filtered out before they ever pass the blood-brain barrier.
Because the ethics committee (and I'm not saying they're wrong) does not allow the kind of experimentation that brought us a great deal of information like you could get in the 1940s.
Because there are savants out there with amazing abilities but no one can teach anyone how to get these abilities - if someone can, they never came to MY school.
Because we can and sometimes have to say certain things and think certain things for desired results - almost like chanting - you'd think the brain would be more self-regulated.
Because from ablation we know that the brain contains memory and the ability to move, yet L. Ron Hubbard did engineering calculations that stated the brain could only hold three months worth of memories - so where do the rest of the memories go?
I'm sure there's more, but my brain can't recall them right now.
Write me privately if you want more.

Because even though everyone brain looks the same, it reacts differently to different people. It is the most complicated and misunderstood organ of the human body because its not fully understood clearly! (Thats what I think)
