We started making round ones around 1890 or so when industrial machinery was able to make them round. Prior to that all nails were either the square cut nail or wrought iron nails. The term "cut nail" just says that it was easier to cut the metal into strips, hence the square look. We still use them today. Cut nails are used to install hardwood floors and then there are the hardened ones that are used to drive into concrete.

Cut nails were the first made by machine. Cut out of flat metal.
