what happens whe you go to a psychiatrist. I'm going to one and I"m kinda scared. What do they ask you? do they just wait for you to talk or do they ask you questions? What if you don't want to talk about something or at all? Will they just sit there and wait for you to answer or just move on? If you have ever been to a psychiatrist or you are one, can you just tell me what happens. It would help me calm down and not be so freaked out about this.

Umm, im not going to apsychiatrist because i just dont feel well, im severely depressed and its been really hard. Ive had extreme suicidal thoughts, written out plans, have cut myself for years, and have overdosed on prescription pills which i was hospitalized for. The psychiatric hospital did not help at all. If anything, ive become worse. Thats why Im going to a psychiatrist and im just uncomfortable with it because talking to people about how i feel is difficult, especially if i feel forced to. for me, this isnt just a visit to the psychiatrist. The idea is that i need a psycjiatrist to change how i feel and think, change everything that is putting me in a lot of danger. I really need help so this is a big thing for me.

psychiatrists are trained to make YOU feel comfortable. YOU'LL BE FINE! i actually love going to a counselor when i need to because they're so nice and it makes you feel so much more relaxed. and another thing is that they won't tell anyone anything you say unless you're hurting yourself, someone else, or someone's hurting you. he/she will probably say "so why did you come here today" or something like that maybe. if you don't want to talk then you don't have to but it's a bit of a waste to be paying all that money to sit and do nothing. try to talk and let it out and then i promise you'll feel at least a little better.
good luck!!!

Are you seeing a psychiatrist or a therapist? Psychiatrists are medical doctors, and typically, people see them mostly for medications. Therapists are the ones who most of the "talking" stuff.

A psychiatrist will ask quite a few questions. Some of them will be personal (such as whether or not you masturbate and how often, or if you are able to reach orgasm). They'll take a basic medical and psychiatric history.

A therapist will ask basically the same questions, but it will be more laid back. It will be much like talking with a friend.

Don't worry - there's nothing to be worried about!

I've been to a psychologist and it was rather a good experience, some one I could talk knowing that there was going to be only an objective judgment. I've never been to a psychiatrist but I imagine is the same kind of experience. Also when I did not wanted to talk about something he would ask about my feelings over that situation, and they go on what you give them, just sit relax and be hones with your self and your feelings and if you feel uncomfortable just speak out the doc. will respect your feelings about it and move on...
good luck and rock on !!!

I'm under the impression that a psychiatrist is basically just to prescribe and track the medications. You might just be seeing a therapist first. Some regular doctors might also prescribe some medications temporarily and advise a referral to a therapist/psychiatrist service.

Never seen one as a client but talked to lots that have.....remember that they are human however much they may believe they are higher beings and DON'T let them intimidate you. You can take representation with you, an advocate. Good luck
mle....psychiatrists are not like counselor it would be great if they were as I'd have to listen to a lot less whinging.

First you have nothing to be afraid of. They will ask you question,s, they will try to find out why you are depressed all of the time, and why you want to hurt yourself, Be honest and open with your answers, They can help you if you are willing to except there help, and realize that you need help. They can see things about you, that you cannot. And you don,t have to like all of there answers for you, But do try, It won,t hurt you

they'll talk to you, ask questions, etc. to keep things going, but expect to do most of the talking. they won't force you to talk if you don't want to, but if you don't want to talk, you should reconsider going at all. they can't help you, determine if/what medicine you need, etc. unless you give them information by talking. the more you're willing to share, the more they can help. lots of people are nervous/scared the first few times, so if you feel like you don't make much progress your first visit, don't let that discourage you from going back.

a psychiatrist is a medical doctor. They usually prescribe meds and do little therapy. In therapy sometimes you talk and sometimes they talk . And yes many can wait until you speak. Your silence means much to them

They start with why you're there, brief history and how the problem came up. If you are uncomfortable with anything they say, just raise the flag and they'll jump to another area.
