It depends one what you mean ... as is the case in almost all of history, there is more than one story here. First, there is the story of how Texas joined the Union in 1845, but then again, they wanted to take this step a decade earlier. Then again, there is the story of how they pulled out of the Union during the Civil War, after having only been in the Union for 16 years ... they pulled out and were brought back in, until 1870! In the meantime, there is the story of Juneteenth, the freeing of the slaves in Texas, which occurred after most other states because somehow the slave owners "forgot" to tell the slaves they were freed.

On December 29, 1845 Texas came into the Union as a result of a treaty between the United States and the Republic of Texas.
Texas is the only state that is allowed to fly it flag at the same level as the United States flag if they are flying side by side.
It was originally Spanish and French territory. Then for 15 years it was part of Mexico. Texans won their indepence from Mexico during the Texas Revolution and became and independent republic for 10 years.
