Check out Project Gutenberg - which has lottsa free books (most of them old and out of copyright, but with over 20,000 books, you'll probably find something you like!)

The other place to look is http://www.netlibrary.com/ (which may or may not work for you, depending on if your local library is subscribed to their service).

Good Luck

Something I don't get either. With a Nook or Kindle there are plenty of free books, the classics that are on school reading lists and even more. The rest that are for sale are at paper back prices or less. The movies for free thing, is another one. there are sites that manage to stay open for a while with bootlegged movies, then people get spoiled. Like the music for free. It has been illegal to download most music, free forever(like from the beginning), this is how the artists make their money. Admittedly the cost of CD's has got out of control, but theft is theft. I guess when you pay $50 for a pair of jeans or $40 for a t-shirt, you feel the need for free books, music, ,and movies.

Legally...there are no sites that are permitted to offer copyright books unless they have received permission from the author and/or publishing company.

In reality, there are a number of sites in other countries that are now posting copyrighted books. This is further explained at this site http://bookyards.blogspot.com/2007/05/free-ebooks-by-isaac-asimov-and-stephen.html
and it uses an example of how one can get books that are copyrighted by Isaac Asimov and Stephen King. Just follow the link.

No, there are not, unless the author has given permission and then he or she would want to get paid for it. That's the point. If someone wanted to give their ideas and creativity away, then there would be absolutely not point in having a copyright to the book.

One might well ask, why do you want to take away someones living? Why do you want to steal money from their pocket? Don't say they have "plenty". Most authors have to hold down a job or two just to support their desire to write. And now you want to prevent them from earning a living? Why?
