They have done soundings for oil in this region. It is referred to as the ANWAR region. Think that stands for Alaska National Wildlife....,Region. They have shown that drilling does little to affect the migration of the caribou. which seems to be the major concern. Actually, the heat needed in the above ground pipeline to keep the oil flowing also keeps grasses growing near the pipe because of the warmth. This actually give caribou more food to eat even in the worst season.

It has been reported that there is enough oil in that region to take care of Americas needs for 10-20 years without outside help. Prudhoe Bay area had alot of oil in it but I am not sure if all these figures are correct.

There is a lot of speculation that there are oil reservoirs in Alaska and there most likely is. However, to drill them would require drilling on and in a wildlife preserve. A lot of people, especially environmentalists are against this. Some people who support oil aren't to excited about damaging a preserve either. Drilling for oil is a very damaging process.
