On December 3, 1967, South African surgeon Christiaan Barnard conducted the first heart transplant on 53-year-old Lewis Washkansky. The surgery was a success. However, the medications that were given to Washkansky to prevent his immune system from attacking the new heart also supressed his body's ability to fight off other illnesses. Eighteen days after the operation, Washkansky died of double pneumonia.

Heart transplantation has dramatically changed since Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the world's first heart transplant on December 3, 1967 in Cape Town, South Africa. Anti-rejection drugs and other advances during the 1980s have made heart transplantation an effective therapy for carefully selected patients with advanced heart disease.

The first heart transplant in the world was performed by Dr Chris Barnard, in my hometown - Cape Town, South Africa
At the Groote Schuur hospital, December 3, 1967. The patient, Louis Warshansky, died about two weeks or so later of pneumonia.

A Google Search on "first heart transplant" will bring up lots of information, including the first transplant in different countries and states.
