Do a paper on prohibition. Then you can write about the gangstars of the roaring 20's.

Write about the "space race" of the 50s and 60s. The Apollo-11 moon landing is perhaps the biggest event that brought our country together (especially in a bitter "red scare" era against Communist Russia) in the 20th century. You can also allude to the modern-day space station, which is a joint effort among many nations, including the U.S. and Russia.

Other possible topics: the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the assassination of JFK, the unprecedented four terms of office for President FDR during World War II -- a feat that will never be repeated (due to legislature limiting a president to two four-year terms).

I gave this answer to a similar question yesterday:

I think WW2 is the most fascinating part of our country's history.

Something I didn't know is that Americans of German descent were called back to Germany to fight for the Nazis. Many answered that call. Imagine the internal conflict. Most people know that Americans fought Americans during the Civil War, but I was among the many who didn't realize it happened during WW2 as well.
