Ok, so I was cleaning the inside of my desktop. I pulled off the heatsink because it was very dirty. Honestly I did not know that the processor chip would come out too. Before yesterday I did not even know what a heatsink was.

Anyway, the chip is a pentium 4 with hyper threading, 3GHZ/512/800. It is also a 478 socket. I want to replace the chip, but I don't want to spend a lot of money. The reason I took it apart in the first place was it wasn't working properly. I'm afraid that if I go and spend alot of money on a replacement chip that I will get it started and will have the same problems.

I would like suggestions, do I need to replace it with a chip of the same specs? If not, can anyone suggest a cpu chip that would be appropriate.

Just to let you know about me, I currently do not know a whole lot about computers, but I am generally all around handy(Jack of all trades, master of none). And I do catch on quickly to this sort of technical thing

Thank you for your help.

go to the website of the manufacturer of the motherboard, get the model number and it'll tell you what's compatible. Very rarely can a motherboard support more than 1 or 2 kinds of processors. Only some of the newer ones support backward compatibility. Let us know if you need help installing it.

Regards,

Brandon

P.S. It would help in the future if you give us the kind of motherboard you have.

Yes, you would need to replace the chip of the same socket type (478).

you could of course replace it with another chip (assuming different socket type), which means you'll have to replace your motherboard too, and maybe your graphic card (if you have)...

I think socket 478 is kinda old, so replacing that won't be very expensive...say less than ~100?

you will need to install the same type of CPU to be on the safe side so you have learned one valuable lesson . never mess with anything you don't know about.

I hope you had the mains plug detached while your messing about in the bin you can blow the mother board if not,

well lets hope you have not blown anything else like your memory, you will only find out when you install another cpu,

ok to price a cpu click on the web link below
