The receiver for their radio, was built into the skid lid. Without a helmet, they couldn't hear any change of plans, while in battle.

I think helmets were worn for protection. Perhaps wearing a helmet lessened the chances of a headshot killing the pilot before he killed himself. I'm sure the Air Force was attempting to down the Japanese migs before they carried out their mission, and that requires a live Japanese pilot to do it.

believe it or not kamikaze pilots weren't around for very long and only came into play AT THE VERY LAST MONTHS OF THE WAR..when japan knew it wasn't gonna win.

and you had to be choosen to be one. the japanese didnt' send out any and all pilots to do this.

just a bit of info thought you might care to know.

I think the radio was in the helmet

FYI to the people commenting about the alcohol/lethal injection... the alcohol helps to 'bring out' the veins. It's not to avoid infection LOL

The helmets I understand. Goggles, radio headsets, cold, all that.

What I don't get is why they needed landing gear.

for communications mainly but also you don't want to die too soon. it would kinda suck if you missed the boat you were supposed to hit because you fainted from a lack of oxygen.

Good query, made me laugh, but, they were for sound. They didn't mind dying but didn't want to go deaf.
