I had my daughters ears pierced about two months ago. I cleaned and turned them as I was supposed to, but today during her bath I noticed that she had a bubble above one of the backs of the earring and that both backings were caked with sticky brown blood. I tried to clean it off to see what exactly was bleeding, but she kept fidgiting and the gunk was too thick. Any suggestions as to what I should do?

Hydrogen peroxide 2-3 times a day, it will remove the gunk without over-drying and is antibacterial.

You could also consider polysporin or Vaseline to stop the new gunk from drying.

Encouraging air flow is your best bet.

However if you notice the skin on the ear turning red more than an inch away from the hole, get medical attention ASAP as it can a) become blood borne, and b) infect the cartilage at the top of the ear -both of which are potentially dangerous.

You should probably take her earrings out immediately, and then 'soak' the blood off with some pads soaked in one part of white vinegar to five parts of water. If your daughter's ears are 'infected' you'll need to take her to a doctor to get some good 'antibiotic ointment' to put on them ... but DO NOT just buy the ointment, because the doctor needs to 'see her ears' to check for the 'infection' first. After that, you should just let her holes 'heal over' and not even try getting them pierced again for at least a year. After that, you may get them 'professionally pierced' and you should use ONLY PLASTIC EARRINGS until they have 'healed completely' ... and you can find the plastic earrings at any good 'girls jewelry store' ... if not, ASK FOR THEM!

If hear ears aren't red, and she hasn't been pulling at them, it might just be from when they were healing. Clean them well and keep an eye on them for awhile, make sure they're not bleeding on a daily basis. If they get tangled in her hair when she sleeps or if she tugs at them, she might be tearing the skin.

They might be infected, or she's developing a keloid scar - which are just ugly. Your best bet is to take her into the pediatrician - if they're infected, she's going to need medication. Do not try to force the earring off either.
