They can cause diverticulitis. Seeds and grains (which contain husks) can cause it... which is the inflammation of the diverticulum.

Most seeds have adapted to have an indigestible outer coating, so that they should pass through unchanged, however, some seeds can (rarely) lodge in the appendix opening, causing inflammation and appendicitis. I work in a hospital, and we recently had a child (7-8 years old) come in with cramps, he had had a bowel resection done several years earlier, and, although he was well, part of his gut had narrowed near the resection site. He had swallowed a cherry pip, it lodged at the restriction, caused massive inflammation, tissue necrosis, and eventually he died. This was a rare combination of many factors, but was ultimately caused by the cherry pip.

Yes. They will germinate and start growing!
Just kidding....I wouldn't worry about most of them. Some could scratch your throat up, but the ones to worry about are the ones not included in normally consumed fruits and vegetables. If you're gathering them yourself, check them out in a reference book; otherwise, don't worry about swallowing watermelon seeds or eating strawberries.
Ack-the previous guy just made a great point. Allergies! They are obviously a personal danger, but you should be aware of them.

I've heard of people with colon polyps not being able to eat any nuts, or it does something bad.
Yes, a lot of seeds are allergenic to a lot of people too.
A lot of seeds are just plain toxic. Castor beans, jimpson weed, peach pits...
