Are there any differences between real life turtles and the turtle as described in the popular fable of the "hare and the turtle"? If so, what are they?

Real turtles don't talk. And they don't race, or make bets, either.

It all depends on your version. I think 'tortoise' and the hare is probably the more accurate title, since turtles are generally aquatic, and can swim quite fast. Tortoises live on dry land, and are pretty slow. They cannot run; running involves having all feet off the ground at some point in the gait, and this is not possible for a tortoise; they can only walk at different speeds.
