If you bought the laptop with vista on it then no it is not a trial, it is yours to keep for that computer. In order to get windows xp onto the laptop, you must first have an windows xp CD, not is not an oem CD (one that came with another computer). You must have one that you bought for the store and has not been activated on another computer.
Then on the new computer, you must format it, losing all data, then you should be able to install XP.

Theres ways to dual boot both Win XP and Vista. You can also make games work on Vista that normally work on XP, I know I have.
Rather than me typing a lot, I recommend you check out these forums at http://thevistaforums.com
They are very resourceful and you can easily search any question or ask any there.

Ok... depending on your skill level, it may be a pain because you can not use an XP restore CD to downgrade from Vista to XP. Unlike what Elvis above says, no Windows restore CD has ever allowed downgrading.
The way you have to do it would be to format the PC using a Boot CD. After that, try using your XP CD to install XP. Unfortunately you'll have to back up anything you want to keep, otherwise you'll lose it.

If your laptop came with vista you can install Windows XP but you will have to purchase a copy of it. It will not ask you which one to run.

no u cannot because its OEM, OEM Short for original equipment manufacturer, which is a misleading term for a company that has a special relationship with computer producers. OEMs are manufacturers who resell another company's product under their own name and branding. While an OEM is similar to a VAR (value-added reseller), it refers specifically to the act of a company rebranding a product to its own name and offering its own warranty, support and licensing of the product. The term is really a misnomer because OEMs are not the original manufacturers; they are the customizers.
But there is a way. Just format the laptop and get the orginal Windows XPt hat is not OEM. like buy at a costco, bestbuy,or fry's stores. whan computer comes with preinstalled software and windows its then OEM.

it should be the FULL verison of Vista. yes you can install XP on it, lots of programs dont work with Vista, but you are going to have to upgrade sooner or later. they might get the games working later.
