Actually Alexander the great did have a family name! Not in the modern sense though!
In ancient years only well known and noble families carried the name of their ancestor as prove of their origin! Most of the times everyone referred to himself with his father name(ex Nickolaos son of Phillip)}
Alexander was from authentic Macedonia of Greece!
{Don’t confuse authentic Macedonia of Greece with the
Modern republic of (Slavic/Albanian)Macedonia as they are not related at all!}
The royal house of ancient Greek Macedonia originally came from the southern Greek city of Argos!
Herodotus gives a description:
"...Three brothers of the lineage of Temenos (son of Hercules) came as banished men from Argos to Illyria, Gavganis(Caranus) and Aeropos and Perdikkas, and worked for the king that was there.
When the king learned that when the queen baked the bread of Perdikkas, it doubled its size, than of the the other breads, he considered that as a miracle and ordered the 3 brothers to leave his kingdom. The brothers required their payment. Then the king told them to take the sun as a payment. Gavganis and Aeropos where taken by surprise and the youngest brother, Perdikkas, accepted the offer. He took out his sword, circled it 3 times and took the sun, which he placed in his underarm and left with his brothers..."
Herodotus VIII,137
And "Caranus also came to Emathia with a large band of Greeks, being instructed by an oracle to seek a home in Macedonia. Hero, following a herd of goats running from a downpour, he seized the city of Edessa, the inhabitants being taken unawares because of heavy rain and dense fog. Remembering the oracle’s command to follow the lead of goats in his quest for ar empire, Caranus established the city as his capital, and thereafter he made it a solemn observance, wheresoever he took his army, to keep those same goats before his standards in order in have as leaders in his exploits the animals which he had had with him to found the kingdom. He gave the city of Edessa the name Aegaeae and its people the name Aegeads in memory of this service”
M.Justinus’ epitome of Pompeius Trogus’ Universal History 7.1
That's why the family name of Alexander is
“ARGIAD”, “Argiad” meaning "from Argos". Since the Greek city of Argos claimed as founder the demigod Hercules the Argiad dynasty of (Greek)Macedonia also claimed Hercules as mythological ancestor!
(Sometimes Alexander family was also called "Timenides" meaning descendants of Temenus.
Note that Alexander signed as “Αλέξανδρος ο Φιλίππου” – “Alexander son of Phillip” most of the time! His full name and title was “Αλέξανδρος ο Φιλίππου Βασιλεύς των Μακεδόνων, Στρατηγός αυτοκράτορας των Ελλήνων.” Which means
“Alexander son of Phillip king of Macedon, general Emperor of all Greece”
Ajax, Achilles and Heracles (Hercules) were all demigods! Their family was partly divine!
Achilles from his father claimed as ancestor Aeacus So his family name from his father was “Aeacides” meaning descendants of “Aeacus”. (Also Alexander the Great traced his ancestry (through his mother) to Aeacus!!!!)
Ajax is also known is Greece as “Ajax the Telamonian”. Meaning “son of Telamon
And Hercules is son of Zeus. (Yes, Zeus the God!!!) He had only a family name from his mother which was “Persiada” from the line of Perseus!
Herxules was a mythological ancestor for almost every royal or noble family of almost every Greek state!
Hope I’ve helped

Mai Melanie Shukoff I major in English Franklin appeals the most to me. (I love guys who can make me laugh, life is all about being happy. Also, we share the same reason for wanting children) ~ Franklin Jethro Ronson: Frankie is a tall and blonde jokester, with mischevious blue eyes and a dimple in his chin. He cracks you up endlessly. He loves children and wants a lot, because he never had siblings of his own. He's the same age as you. If you picked FRANKLIN.... • Ten months after you marry, you're pregnant with a boy. His first name is two syllables. His middle name is after a family relative. - Peter Daniel Ronson • Two years later, you give have another boy. His first name is Biblical and his middle name is nature related. - David Oliver Ronson • When you firstborn is five and your second boy is three, you have twin boys. Their first names start with the same letter. The first boy's middle name must start with a J and the other boy's middle name must start with an M. - William Jack Ronson and Washington Maddox Ronson • A few years later, you give birth to your final child: a girl. Her first name must be able to be shortened to a nickname (e.g. Josie for Josephine). Her middle name is a flower. - Isabella (Bella) Lily Ronson

Back in those days, there were no family names. People were known by the lands they owned (or, failing that, by their birthplace or place of residence, which for most people was the same place anyway; for example, Herodotus, "the father of history," was known as Herodotus of Halicarnassus in his lifetime) or by nicknames they earned by doing something of note.
Alexander's family was the royal house of Macedon, so his father was known as Philip II of Macedon; Alexander was crowned Alexander III of Macedon, but eventually, due to his success as a military leader, he became known as Alexander the Great ("Megas Alexandros" in Greek).

There were no family names at that time (still is this way in Iceland, for example). Sometimes they used the father's name or some sobriquet for extra identification.
