How can I get my desktop to talk to me? Things like, Goodmorning John, or Have a nice day?

make a recording of what you want it to say... the put the recording into the sound folder, click on the recording and it will say what ever you recorded when it boots up

I used to do that... it was funny but it got boring after a while
here is a free program that works great !!!! (at least when I used it 1 year ago...)
responding heads, it is freeware, you can speak to it and it will reply, for ex

you can set it up to say the current time....
