Hi Tiffster
Simple answer: "No".
It would be extremely unusual for someone to be violent whilst dreaming, since REM sleep is normally accompanied by SP (sleep paralysis) which seems to be nature's way of making sure we can't act out our dreams and hurt ourselves or someone else.
Having said that, the situation is certainly not completely unknown. "Sleep terrors" (NOT the same thing as a nightmare) is one such condition in which a person may become highly active even though they are genuinely fast asleep.
IMPORTANT: There is NO indication that a person experiencing sleep terrors is necessarily particularly stressed. And it is CERTAINLY NOT a sign that the person has any mental problems.
The condition tends to be mostly associated with children under 10 years old. But it can also, far less frequently, affect adolescents and even adults.
If this is happening to you or someone you know, and if it is becoming a problem, then it might be a good idea to consult your doctor, or get yourself referred to a specialist, as there are medications which can, for most people, hold the symptoms in check.

I don't remember what I was dreaming, but I woke up and I was pinching the inside of my upper arm, in various spots, and my heart was pounding. The next morning I had 5 or 6 black and blue marks- so I was pinching myself pretty hard. I agree that stress is likely to blame for lots of weird dreams.

My ex was into karate and several times in the middle of the night I was awoken by being kicked or chopped. He would be fighting tournaments in his sleep. I think I lost.
A friend once told me she woke up and her husband was trying to choke her. He was having a nightmare that he was being attacked. (I was concerned until she assured me that he WAS asleep and she had to smack him in the face and pinch him hard to get his hands off of her throat.)
My daughter used to sleep walk and do all sorts of strange things. So yes, it is possible.

Yes, ..... some people hit, punch and/or kick while asleep. It's definitely signs of stress. My cousin, an only child, used to do this when she slept in her parents' bed. When she was already a teenager she kicked so hard that she broke one of her mom's ribs.

This is possible. It can happen. They may just be shaking and rolling around violently but they would not give a sure-fire non-doubtable punch.
