I was wondering if trouts breed in lakes, and if so, what is the criteria?

Yes they can. Brown trout (Salmo trutta) are probably the best choice, depending on water temperature. Rainbow trout will do well and breed in large, cooler ponds and since these are deep they may work. the criteria would be different depending on your location, here's a link for a plan if you live in a climate similar to West Virginia:

or one for Ohio:

If I can help any further feel free to email me

Yes almost all trout especially rainbow (and not so much the brook) are the number one choices for pond raised fish. Trout spawn when the water is cold, just before spring. No special requirements other than food.

Lake trout tend to be larger than the creek counterparts due to the abundance of food (minnows, fly larve, bugs etc)

If you plan on raising them in a pond, adding a good feed will also help.
