The biggest issue was the German high command's tendency to try to micromanage the war. Instead of letting the competent field officers fight the war as necessary, they dictated all kinds of orders and limitations. Case in point: The high command refused to release control of armored units to local commanders during the D-day landings because they were convinced it was a diversion.

Quite clearly Hitler's anti-communist crusade was doomed from the beginning as it was the Soviets who defeated him. So i would say breaking the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was the mistake, even though quite clearly it was designed to be broken.
Don't let them confuse you. Hitler, like every postwar US president, came to power on an anti-communist platform. The similarities don't stop there.
