1244 miles. From Huntsville, Alabama, to Taos, New Mexico.

In 1989, our family (me, wife, daughters 4 and 7) were returning from a family reunion in central N.Y. State in our Dodge Lancer 2.2 liter 4 cylinder 5-speed.

Our strategy on that trip was to leave in the late afternoon travel a couple of hours, and stop for dinner. That would put the kids to sleep for the night, and we'd drive all night. As I recall we arrived in Taos after about an even 24 hrs on the road.

Little did we know that we were in the process of killing that car. It was loaded to the brim with luggage, with camping gear & bicycles on the roof rack. It would barely do the speed limit on cruise control against the prevailing west wind and steady uphill grind. Probably over its max vehicle weight.

It finally gave up a couple of days later on the last stage from Taos to L.A., in the middle of the Great Sonora Desert between Needles and Barstow -- in August, no less. A big rig driver stopped and gave us all a ride 90 miles to Barstow, arriving around midnight, where I got a AAA tow truck to take me back and haul the fully loaded car back to Barstow. We rented a car and left the Lancer there for repairs (blown head gasket).

This was back in 2001 and we went 1,000 miles in one day. Drove from Decatur, Illinois to Colorada Springs. We took two of our daughters on vacation to visit my sister who lives there. I drove the whole way in our 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe. We went interstate as much was we could and I was able to set the cruise at 80 once we got into Kansas. Didn't get stalled behind any construction work or any accidents, so we just cruised right along the whole trip.

We stopped to eat and get gas a few times and if I remember it right it was a 20 hour day in all, but actual driving time was about 16 hours.

That trip sold me on the Chevy Tahoe as it was very comfortable taking the 4 of us and all our gear on that trip. For a big SUV the mileage wasn't too bad. About 19 mpg if I remember right.

Mine would probably be a round trip from the Dallas suburbs to LaPorte, TX and back, about 575 miles.

I also regularly do drives from Dallas to Abilene and back (about 180 miles each way) because I do transport for rescue groups.

Other long hauls:

Chicago to Columbus OH (383 miles)
Chicago to Dallas (980 miles, but in 2 legs)
Chicago to Northeast Missouri (407 miles, done numerous times because of college)

1200, I went from Chicago, IL, to Denver, CO, it took about 20 hours, it was a good ride, I was alone, and I was in a 1998 Chevy Cavalier. One of the best, most fuel efficient cars on the face of the planet.
I am getting 38.999 miles per gallon on the freeway. In town I am getting 33-35 MPG.

Actually, it's a pretty nice area....may have to move here.

i think i drove around 500 miles - it was a joy ride around the state of ga- a friend came with me he had rented the car for me because i had just gotten out of lock up ( i was found innocent ) and needed to get away from where i was - it was a burgandy four door i think a stratus dodge - it was a fun comfortable ride - all we did was drive and listin to music - went in a few stores - and ate - we picked up a hitchhiker who looked homeless and dropped him off we would have taken him further but he smelled too bad -
