Consider any two real numbers, a and b, where a = b.
Multiply both sides by a:
a x a = a x b
Subtract b x b from both sides:
(a x a) - (b x b) = (a x b) - (b x b)
The left side is (a + b) x (a - b)
Distribute the right side:
(a + b) x (a - b) = b (a - b)
Divide both sides by (a - b)
a + b = b
Substitute a for b:
a + a = a
Thus, 2 x a = a
Divide both sides by a:
2 = 1
Add one to both sides:
2 + 1 = 1 + 1
Thus, 3 = 1 + 1, or 1 + 1 = 3.

By PROVING it.
BTW, to the dude above:
"Distribute the right side:
(a + b) x (a - b) = b (a - b)
Divide both sides by (a - b)
"
You can't divide by (a - b) if a and b are equal, because that would give you a 0 in the denominator. Since a - b can't be equal, then a + b is NOT b, therefore, the rest of the "proof" is wrong.

call them a, b, and c. a and c represent mathematical truths in a base 3 or higher system (a) or base 2 (b, i.e., computer language) system. b is the odd man out, and appears with out logic, so that is perhaps a mystical, metaphysical or irrational truth.
farewell on your quest for truth.
