Good question. The obvious answer, of course, is to take part and be a good sport.

However, I am very competitive in sports that I play, and I easily see the other side.

When you play sports, your GOAL should not be to take part. Your goal should be to win. People who pay sports to take part in them instead of to win are either not very good, under the age of ten, or have something wrong with them.

But keep in mind, winning has several definitions. A 40 year old woman running in the Boston Marathon won't be aiming realistically to win the race, rather to improve on her best time. That is another sense of winning.

Oh yeah, and you can't win without taking part. :p

I think to take part mainly because life is all about the ride and playing sports is a rush and a thrill. Winning may be more fun, but if you are having fun doing the sport, then it is just taking part.

Personal belief is that actually playing the game, whatever it is, is more important.
This will teach you about competition, sportsmanship, and how to win and lose gracefully. Once you play enough, winning will happen by itself, i.e. practice. Winning is great, but just getting in there and playing, will make a better, well rounded individual.

imho

That is a great question!!!

For kids ... It is not Whether you will or lose, but how you play the game.

For pro coaches, its win or be terminated!!!
