I live in NE and a bunch of kids/college students are being sued for using Limewire. Does anyone know anyone that this happened to and should I stop, it's a hefty fine if you are caught, though there are millions of people on this sight downloading free music all the time. Or does anyone have a suggestion on a website that does not charge a dollar a song and is safe???

Yes it is a crime is most countries in the world. There are some countries where they will not come after you if you do it in your home. If you download music in your office, they will charge you with a crime. Same goes for serials/cracks.

Your other risk, is that when you use P2P, you are at risk always for trojans and if not caught by your antivirus your pc will either have to reformatted or cause damage to your entire system.

Well all I can say is I love p2p networks, who doesn't want free music & software?! But the truth is that the Goverment here in the USA is getting pretty "anal" (excuse the term) on p2p networks. They are shutting them done or demanding that the program such as limewire or morpheus use DRM
(Digital Rights Management) which is pretty much a pay as you go or subscription service. Now if you were to go ahead and use limewire anyways, I assume there is about a 25% chance or less of you getting caught. After all there is like millions of users on the Gnutella networks. If you do get caught there is a super hefty fine, maybe even prison time. Have you ever seen the COPYRIGHT Stuff on A DVD or Video? The same laws are applied to P2P Networks.

Yes you are at risk. and you have pretty much answered the question already, its a hefty fine.

Limewire is based on the gnutella protocol, which is very much distributed, but still easily tracked.

There are millions of people on Limewire but many of them are not in the US, so they now they are fairly safe.

You should try music subscription as an alternative. It will cost between $9 and $14 per month, but it allows you to listen to unlimited music and download as much music to your MP3 player as it can take.
The best services are Napster, Yahoo and Rhapsody.

Myself, and friends use music subscription. It works great for us. When you stop the subscription, you wont have access to the music anymore, but we all like to listen to a lot of music, and the access to any song they have is great. We were tired of buying CDs with only a few songs, or paying money for songs we stop listening to in the a few months.
And if you are planning a road trip or having a party, its awesome that you can play almost any song that anyone may feel like listeneing too.

Theres yeet another option. Internet radio. Theres some good stations. Check Shoutcast and live365. Theres also last.fm which has really good playlist, even though you can't skip songs, its a great source for free music.

Using Limewire or any other P2P file sharing program such as Kaaza or Bearshare, (free or paid) to steal copyrighted music, movies, software etc. in illegal in the USA.

It is fairly rare, but people do get sued and fined for using these P2P programs. Such as this 12 year old girl here:

Yes, you are at risk. Anyone the downloads from peer to peer, such as Lime Wire is at risk of lawsuit and hefty fines, not to mentions the free viruses you get from Lime Wire as well. If you insist on not paying for your music you listen to, then you a torrent client instead, such as utorrent or axureus, as they actually have legitimate usages.

Some newer players are creating their own Itunes type stores where music goes as low as 50 cents a song but that's for lesser known artists. As for your legal liability, you can get in trouble and it is a hefty fine and this is the season they crack down on downloading for some reason.

Download utorrent, use isohunt to find the music. Way faster than limewire anyways

Limewire itself is not illegal, but MOST of the activities carried out on it are. There are some legal activities you can do on limewire.

Don't use limewire if you don't want viruses.

Yes...Limewire and all the other "free" download sites are illegal. You are downloading copyrighted material. There are no legitimate sites that do not charge. sorry.

We know that if we download a music for free, we can be held liable for that. It is considered a music piracy or intellectual property rights infringement.

Me, I use bitcomet to download music or movies for free.
